 Description
Alcohol abuse and dependency is a common and complex constellation of problems with an estimated overall prevalence of 8 to 14%. It is estimated that 20% or more of adults who visit a primary physician have experienced an alcohol problem at some point and that as many as 30% of hospitalized patients for various medical problems (other than alcohol abuse, per se) have a positive screen for alcoholism. Every clinician caring for individuals nearing adolescence through senescence has alcohol and drug dependent patients, (some or many are undiagnosed). It has elements of a medical illness, a learned behavioral disorder and a dependency (addiction) syndrome.

This publication is a clinical guideline for the diagnosis, evaluation and management of the person who is addicted or dependent on the use of alcohol. It covers diagnostic criteria, risk factors, screening for alcoholism, treatment settings, criteria for inpatient care and length of stay goals, as well as drug management of withdrawal symptoms when necessary. Adolescent and geriatric alcohol dependency issues are reviewed.

Resources include screening tests, an access list of national organizations devoted to alcoholism treatment, educational materials, alcohol-related web sites, and extensive references.

These criteria meet the URAC standards.
