Julie Bunde, director, product management at HealthPartners, Kathleen Campbell, head of consumer-driven health plans at Aetna, and Alexander Domaszewicz, principal at Mercer, described these critical elements, including:

  • Controlling healthcare costs and engaging members and/or employees in a consumer-directed benefit strategy;
  • Assigning appropriate levels of employee/member responsibility for their health;

  • Engaging senior leadership in the consumer-driven strategy;
  • Implementing strategies for higher employee adoption of CDH plans; and
  • Providing the right tools and education to employees/members for health decision support.

Aetna also analyzed the results of an in-depth analysis of a five-year study of healthcare claims and utilization for members of its consumer-directed plans, which resulted in sustained savings and improved patient outcomes.

ABOUT OUR PANELIST:

Julie Bunde
Control over healthcare costs is attractive to many potential CDHP members.

Julie Bunde is director of product management at HealthPartners' and is responsible for developing and managing their group and individual commercial plans. Bunde has led the development of HealthPartners’ Empower suite of consumer-directed health plans and consumer cost tools over the past several years.

Bunde has 17 years of healthcare experience and has served the HealthPartners organization in a variety of finance, business development and product development roles since 1990. Previous to HealthPartners, Bunde served as a treasury analyst for Caterpillar, Inc.

HealthPartners is a family of nonprofit Minnesota healthcare organizations focused on improving the health of its members, its patients and the community. HealthPartners and its related organizations provide healthcare services, insurance and HMO coverage to more than one million medical and dental members in Minnesota and nationwide. HealthPartners is the top rated plan in Minnesota according to eValue8/National Business Coalition on Health.

Bunde is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, and a Master of Business Administration in Marketing.

Kathleen Campbell
Aware of the complexities that come along with health plans, Aetna is determined to make it easier for their customers to become better healthcare consumers.

Kathleen M. Campbell has held a wide spectrum of positions during her 29 year career at Aetna. She is currently senior product manager responsible for the product development teams supporting Aetna’s consumer directed products -Health Reimbursement Arrangements, Health Savings Accounts, Value Based Insurance Design and the Personal Health Record.

During Campbell’s long and diverse career at Aetna she has been responsible for customer plan implementation teams, network development for PPO products, sales director for new business, vice-president for HMO sales for national accounts, manager of existing business for the Connecticut market, head of training and communications for national accounts and head of marketing and communications for middle market. Her most recent position was in retiree markets and business development.

Campbell has been assigned to Aetna’s internal task force on racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare. The initiative began in the fall of 2002 and was sponsored by Chairman, Dr. John D. Rowe. Her specific role on the task force is data collection. The task force remains active and is currently chaired by Dr. Troy Brennan, chief medical officer.

Campbell has a Bachelor of Science in Risk and Insurance from the University of Connecticut. She also volunteers as a wellness ambassador at Aetna.

Alexander
Domaszewicz
CDHPs give Gen X and Y an opportunity to approach healthcare in a way that is more suitable for their lifestyles.

Alexander “Sander” Domaszewicz is a principal and senior consultant with Mercer Health and Benefits Services. He is Mercer’s national practice leader for consumerism, specializing in emerging benefits and ways to encourage groups to become involved and informed around healthcare cost and quality. Areas of focus include healthcare strategy, consumer directed healthcare, health and benefits decision support tools, web health resources, human resource portals and online benefits.

Domaszewicz’s prior experience includes project management in the health and group benefits delivery services group at a large multi-national consulting firm for flexible benefits administration outsourcing. In this capacity he addressed outsourcing issues, systems integration, design, and testing as well as database administration and training relating to flexible benefits. Prior to benefits outsourcing project management, Domaszewicz managed a hearing healthcare facility in Southern California, giving him exposure to issues from the provider perspective.

Domaszewicz is a frequent presenter at healthcare and benefits-related events and has published articles in Benefits Quarterly, Employee Benefit News, HR Magazine, and Workforce. His consulting assignments include work with many large and small public and private organizations in both the benefits and product development areas.

Domaszewicz holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from San Diego State University, a Master in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and a certificate in Human Resources Management from Cornell University.
