Description

Whether it's a payor enhancing reimbursement for care management of patients enrolled in medical homes or a provider funding its transformation to the medical home model, both organizations expect a healthy ROI from this patient-centered model of care.

Listen to pre-conference comments from George Chedraoui and Dr. Don Liss.

During Medical Home Metrics and Measurements for Achieving ROI, a 90-minute webinar on April 1, 2009, now available as a CD-ROM, via On Demand Web access or as a training DVD, we heard from two leading industry experts who shared different viewpoints — the healthcare purchaser and the healthcare payor — and their strategies for achieving an ROI from the medical home.

George Chedraoui, healthcare leader with IBM and immediate past president of Bridges to Excellence, described the upstream measures that IBM is using to measure physician practice alignment with the medical home model of care and its formula for achieving a long-term significant ROI.

Dr. Don Liss, regional medical director for the mid-Atlantic region of Aetna, shared how Aetna is demanding objective and careful analysis of medical home initiatives, from patient and provider satisfaction to clinical and short and long-term financial yields.

You will also get details on:

  • Establishing metrics to measure the effectiveness of medical home initiatives;
  • Developing reportable measures, from upstream to downstream measures;
  • Designing quality assessments for medical homes; and
  • Understanding medical home ROI from a purchaser's and a payor's perspective.

ABOUT OUR PANELIST:

George Chedraoui
While $19 billion in health IT funding will stimulate the adoption of EHRs, technology adoption alone won't transform a physician practice into a medical home.

George Chedraoui, healthcare leader with IBM is serving in an HR advisory capacity, working closely with IBM senior management on designing and deploying a patient-centric healthcare strategy for 500,000 employees, retirees and dependents. Chedraoui has over 20 years of business experience spanning multiple industries. He has held leadership positions in risk management, occupational health services, and most recently, in well-being and health benefits.

Chedraoui’s main areas of responsibilities focus on advising IBM management on adopting strategies that drive value in healthcare, with focus on wellness, consumerism, chronic care management, and the implementation of the patient-centered medical home. He is providing thought leadership on the need to transform the way healthcare is purchased, delivered, and consumed.

Chedraoui was elected 2007 board chair and president of Bridges to Excellence, a non-profit organization created to encourage significant leaps in the quality of care by recognizing and rewarding healthcare providers for meeting specific quality criteria. He also serves as a director of The Leapfrog Group, an employer-led organization designed to promote transparency and access to healthcare information in America’s hospitals.

Chedraoui received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering at Penn State.

Dr. Don Liss
While waiting for medical home ROI, there are some short-term indicators that mean the PCMH is working.

Don Liss, M.D., regional medical director at Aetna oversees a staff of nurses, physicians, and clinical support personnel responsible for promoting the delivery of healthcare to over two million members of Aetna health plans in Pa., Del., Md., Va., W.V., Southern N.J., and the District of Columbia. Dr. Liss joined Aetna in 1997 as senior medical director for patient management. Prior to joining Aetna, he served as senior vice president for medical affairs at Health Partners.

Dr. Liss is board certified in internal medicine, and is a fellow of American College of Physicians. He currently serves as a member of the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council and is director of Healthwell Foundation.

Dr. Liss is a native of Philadelphia and a 1987 graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania (now Drexel University College of Medicine). He completed residency training in internal medicine and served as chief medical resident at Temple University Hospital prior to a Clinician-Educator Fellowship in general internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Liss was an associate in the Department of Medicine at The Graduate Hospital, practicing primary care and consultative general internal medicine, and performing administrative duties related to the internal medicine residency training program and a Medicare + Choice HMO plan.
