 Description

The onslaught of data breaches reported in the media has intensified interest in regulating healthcare to ensure the confidentiality of patient data. The reasons for protecting patient data go well beyond HIPAA. The costs of these breaches are climbing, public confidence is declining, and state and federal lawmakers are growing inpatient with the failure of organizations to protect sensitive data.

Healthcare organizations also are under growing pressure to improve security as federal and state governments are funding initiatives to create health information exchanges and electronic health records.

HHS is putting healthcare on notice that if it wants to enjoy the benefits of information technology, it must address the new and evolving security issues posed by advances in technology now.

The department issued guidance on remote computing security and now is revising its HIPAA security regulation to address these challenges.

To assist healthcare, Health Information Privacy/Security Alert is sponsoring Preparing for the New HIPAA Security Rules on Remote Access and Consumer Electronics.

This 90-minute audio seminar on Thursday, June 7, focuses on HHS's recently issued guidance and planned rewrite of the HIPAA security rule, and strategies for responding.

Participants will be briefed on:

  • HHS's rationale behind its guidance from one of the senior HHS staffers who helped write it;
  • What to expect from CMS in remote computing enforcement and further guidance;
  • The Top 10 areas of risk;
  • Examples of the new threats;
  • Strategies for addressing the new risks; and more.
