Description

Essential Elements for Physician Practice PFP Success: Key Steps in EHR Selection and Implementation, an audio conference on CD-ROM, provided a road map for physician practices on selecting and implementing an electronic health record (EHR) that supports quality reporting for success in pay-for-performance programs and recoups the initial investment.

Listen to some pre-conference comments from our audio conference presenters.

A growing number of physician practices are evaluating whether the investment in an EHR will pay off through additional incentive payments from pay-for-performance (PFP) programs, especially in light of CMS' recent physician voluntary reporting program that promises an incentive payment for physician practices that report their quality measures.

During this 90-minute audio conference on CD-ROM, industry experts Dr. Joel Diamond, medical director of Diamond, Fera and Associates, and Dr. James R. Morrow, vice president and CIO, North Fulton Family Medicine, provided physician practices with the key factors to consider when deciding to implement an EHR, along with the critical steps to a successful EHR implementation.

You will get details on how to:

  • Determine whether your practice will recoup its investment in an EHR through PFP programs;
  • Start the selection process;
  • Avoid the pitfalls in vendor selection;
  • Select an EHR that includes the functionality to support PFP programs;
  • Differentiate between various EHRs and the elements needed for successful PFP programs;
  • Formulate an implementation strategy for an EHR system for PFP participation;
  • Overcome the barriers to EHR implementation; and
  • Realize a return on investment.

PRE-CONFERENCE COMMENTS FROM OUR PRESENTERS:

Dr. Joel Diamond, medical director of Diamond, Fera and Associates, explains how concentrating on people rather than IT and engaging the medical leadership and the rest of the staff at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for successful hospital implementation of an electronic health record -- a lesson that can be applied to physician practices:

It's normal for physician practices adopting EHRs to fear a loss of data, says Dr. Jim Morrow, vice president and chief information officer of North Fulton Family Medicine in Georgia, but there are technical safeguards such as those in place at North Fulton that can greatly diminish this worry:
